Let's admit it. Our city sucks when it comes to negotiating with regional agencies like Sound Transit (aligning an elevated rail line behind fences of SF homes, to save 0.3% of the project cost) or WSDOT (the hideous 405N to 520E interchange with a blind merge from the 10th St on-ramp into traffic flowing at highway speeds) or getting a plain old bridge on Bellevue Way while Media got beautiful parks on lids. The BNSF railway line that runs through many of the eastside cities was recently purchased by King County towards implementing a regional trail system. While Kirkland which worked in partnership with King County on the purchase has already announced plans to convert it to a trail, Bellevue has not been proactive in this regard. We see cars on some of the major downtown streets speeding on the outer lanes right next to pedestrians on sidewalks. This results in discouraging pedestrians as they feel unsafe. I would love to see some streets which have 6-7 lanes (combined) be converted to one way streets with the outer lanes reserved for street parking. This also speeds traffic movement as it eliminates turn signals.
